How To Uninstall and Reinstall The Protexis Licensing Service

You need to reinstall the Protexis Licensing Service so that you can register Act!

The Protexis Licensing Service is required to successfully register Act! and maintain the licensing information associated with your serial number(s). If the service becomes damaged or is removed, you can use the LicensingService.exe file in the File Attachments section near the bottom of this article to reinstall it.

Important: The LicensingService.exe file will only work with the following versions of Act!:
  • Act! v16 (16.x)
  • Sage ACT! 2013 (15.x)
  • Sage ACT! 2012 (14.x)
  • Sage ACT! 2011 (13.x)
  • ACT! 2010 (12.x)
  • ACT! 2009 (11.x)
  • ACT! 2008 (10.x)
  • ACT! 2007 (9.0.1 with Hotfix 2 or higher)

If Protexis is damaged, follow the steps below to manually remove and then reinstall the service. If Protexis is not on your machine, then skip ahead to Step 6:
  1. Click on Start then Run. Type "services.msc" in the Open field and then click OK. The Services console appears.
  2. Locate and right-click Protexis Licensing V2 on the right-hand side of the console and select Stop. A dialog box briefly appears indicating the service stopping.
  3. Close the Services console.
  4. In a Windows® Explorer window, browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files and delete the Protexis folder
    • Note: On 64-bit Windows® Operating Systems, browse to C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files
  5. Browse to, and open the following folder, depending on your version of ACT! and your computer's operating system:

    Sage ACT! 2012, Sage ACT! 2013, Act! v16
    Windows XP, Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Protexis
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008: C:\ProgramData\Protexis

    ACT! 2007 (9.0.1 Hot Fix 3 and higher), ACT! 2008, ACT! 2009, ACT! 2010, Sage ACT! 2011
    Windows XP, Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008: C:\ProgramData

    ACT! 2005, 2006, 2007 (9.0.1, Hot Fix 2)
    Windows XP, Server 2003: C:\Windows\system32
    Windows 2000, Server 2000: C:\Winnt\system32

    NOTE: In some instances files from older versions of Act! can be left behind. If you're still having problems after performing these steps pleae check old directories as detailed above. 

  6. Locate and rename the KGyGaAvL.sys file to KGyGaAvL.old
  7. Locate the 10-digit alpha-numeric .sys file, and rename the .sys extension to .old 

    NOTE: This file will have exactly 10 characters in the name (not including the .sys extension), so becareful not to rename any .sys files that have more or less than 10 characters. 

  8. Close the Windows Explorer window.
  9. Click Start and select Run.
  10. The Run dialog box appears. In the Select field, type regedit.

    Warning: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files.   11. Browse to the following locations (if present) and delete the PSI_SVC_2 key:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Services


  12. Browse to the following locations and delete the Protexis key:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Protexis
      If your computer uses a 64-bit operating system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Protexis
    • HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Protexis


  13. Close the Registry Editor.
  14. Reboot your computer.
  15. To reinstall the Protexis licensing service, use the LicensingService.exe file at the bottom of this article.
  16. Double-click the file, choose the Save option and save it to your desktop.
  17. Locate the file where you saved it and double-click it to reinstall the service.

IMPORTANT:
If you are using ACT! 2007 or ACT! 2008, after the Licensing Service file has installed, please follow these additional steps:
  1. Navigate to and open the Protexis folder in Step 4 from above.
  2. Right-click on the PSIKey_2.dll file, select Rename, and rename it to PSIKey.dll.
  3. Restart the Protexis Licensing V2 service from the Services console.

If you are using Sage ACT! 2012 or above, after the Licensing Service file has installed, please follow these additional steps:
  1. Navigate to and open the appropriate folder:
    • 32-bit OS: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Protexis\License Service
    • 64-bit OS: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Protexis\License Service
  2. Right-click on the PSIKey_2.dll file, select Rename, and rename it to PSIKey_3.dll.
  3. Restart the Protexis Licensing V2 service from the Services console.
